Teenage prospect Thomas Rew has committed his future to Somerset after signing a contract extension that will keep him at the Cooper Associates County Ground until the end of the 2028 season.

The highly-rated wicketkeeper-batter, who is still only 18, continues his rapid rise after breaking into Somerset’s First XI last summer. A product of the county’s Emerging Player Programme, Rew has progressed steadily through the ranks since joining the pathway setup as an under-11.

Rew made his senior debut in the Vitality Blast in 2025 and featured in three matches in the competition. He also impressed in the Metro Bank One-Day Cup where he scored 308 runs from 10 appearances at an average of 44.00, with a top score of 84 not out.

England Under-19 Captain Continues Rapid Rise

The Taunton St Andrews player has already established himself as one of English cricket’s brightest young talents. Earlier this year he captained England Under-19 cricket team to the Under-19 World Cup final before earning further recognition with a tour to Australia alongside the England Lions squad.

His rise has continued at county level too. After making his Second XI debut in 2023, Rew recently stepped into the County Championship side for the first time against Yorkshire County Cricket Club.

Speaking in a statement released by Somerset following the announcement of his new deal, Rew reflected on how quickly his career has progressed over the past year.

“Opportunities such as those with the England U19s and the England Lions have arrived pretty fast for me in the last 12 months and events have happened in my cricketing journey so far that I wasn’t necessarily expecting.

“I’m grateful to Somerset for all the opportunities they have given me so far. I just try to take one match at a time and not look too far ahead, an approach which really helped me last year.”

Somerset head coach Jason Kerr also spoke to the club’s media team and praised the youngster’s temperament and maturity.

“Thomas has an innate ability to be incredibly competitive and read situations effectively. There’s a maturity in his cricket that not everybody has and that’s combined with ability and talent.

“It’s going to be really exciting to see how he develops but I think it’s important that we’re patient.”

With older brother James already firmly established in Somerset’s senior side, the Rew name is becoming increasingly influential in the West Country and Thomas now appears set to play a major role in the club’s long-term future.
