The IPL final will return to Ahmedabad in 2026 after the BCCI confirmed a late change in plans, moving the title clash away from Bengaluru and handing the Narendra Modi Stadium hosting rights for a second straight season.

The grand finale is now scheduled for May 31 at the world’s largest cricket venue, while the playoff matches will be split between Dharamsala and New Chandigarh in what the board described as a “special case” arrangement for this year’s competition.

Ahmedabad to Host IPL 2026 Final as BCCI Revises Playoff Plan

In an official statement released on Wednesday, the BCCI explained that operational and logistical concerns had led to the decision, while also pointing to issues raised by local authorities in Bengaluru.

“Owing to certain requirements from the local association and authorities that were beyond the scope of BCCI’s established guidelines and protocols, the venue has been shifted and reassigned.”

The board also confirmed that the playoff schedule would now be spread across three cities.

“Owing to certain operational and logistical considerations, the TATA IPL 2026 Playoffs will be conducted across three venues this season as a special case.”

Under the revised line-up, the HPCA Stadium in Dharamsala will host Qualifier 1 on May 26. The New International Cricket Stadium in New Chandigarh will stage the Eliminator on May 27 and Qualifier 2 on May 29 before the tournament concludes in Ahmedabad on May 31.

The move further strengthens Ahmedabad’s reputation as the IPL’s premier venue for marquee occasions. The Narendra Modi Stadium has become synonymous with major cricketing events in recent years, regularly drawing massive crowds and global attention.

KSCA Responds After Bengaluru Loses Hosting Rights

Soon after the BCCI’s announcement, the Karnataka State Cricket Association responded with a statement expressing disappointment while reiterating its support for the board’s authority.

In a media release issued hours after the decision became public, the KSCA said:

“Despite our preparedness and willingness to host the Playoffs, we understand that the BCCI has taken a decision to allot these matches to other venues.”

The association added that the BCCI had not formally communicated the reasons behind the decision to them directly.

“While the specific reasons for the same have not been formally communicated to KSCA, we fully respect the prerogative and decision-making authority of the BCCI in this regard.”

The revised playoff structure could also have a significant impact on the competitive balance of the knockout stage. In previous seasons, the IPL usually staged Qualifier 2 and the final at the same venue, giving the winner of Qualifier 2 a chance to adapt to familiar conditions before the title clash. This year, however, both finalists will have to travel to Ahmedabad, potentially creating a more even contest.

Playoff Race Intensifies as Teams Battle for Top Four

The development is particularly notable for Royal Challengers Bengaluru, who were originally in line to enjoy home advantage if they reached the final. Bengaluru have been impressive at the Chinnaswamy Stadium this season, winning four of their five home matches. Their only defeat came against Delhi Capitals last month.

RCB currently sit second in the standings with 12 points from nine matches and remain strongly placed for a playoff berth. Punjab Kings lead the table with 13 points from nine games, while Sunrisers Hyderabad, Rajasthan Royals and Gujarat Titans are level with RCB on 12 points.

Meanwhile, Chennai Super Kings kept their campaign alive with a timely win over Delhi on Tuesday. The five-time champions remain sixth in the standings but are now just two points behind the cluster of teams occupying positions from second to fifth as the playoff race begins to tighten.
