  • Hardik Pandya has re-entered the race for India’s T20I captaincy
  • Suryakumar Yadav’s declining numbers have raised fresh concerns
  • Selectors are reportedly planning for the next T20I cycle

Hardik Pandya has once again emerged at the centre of India’s T20I captaincy conversation as uncertainty grows around the future of current skipper Suryakumar Yadav during IPL 2026.

Fresh reports suggest the Indian team management and selectors are considering a leadership reset ahead of the next T20I cycle with Hardik now viewed as a leading contender for the role.

The dynamic all-rounder had already been in the frame before Suryakumar was handed the captaincy and recent developments have only strengthened his case.

Despite enduring a mixed IPL 2026 campaign, Hardik’s credentials as a white-ball leader continue to impress decision makers. His calmness under pressure and instinctive attacking approach have long made him one of India’s most trusted figures in high-stakes cricket.

Hardik Pandya Strengthens his Case for Leadership Role

While selectors are also believed to be weighing up alternatives including Shreyas Iyer, Hardik remains the standout candidate in current discussions.

The all-rounder’s leadership record speaks for itself. He guided Gujarat Titans to a dream IPL title in their debut season in 2022 before taking them to another final the following year. He also steered Mumbai Indians into the playoffs in the 2025 season.

At international level, Hardik has already captained India in both ODI and T20I cricket. Under his leadership, India registered 10 wins in 16 T20Is while also winning two of the three ODIs he oversaw. His ability to deliver in crunch moments and inspire confidence within the dressing room has reportedly elevated him above the rest of the field.

Suryakumar Yadav’s Form Slump Raises Selection Concerns

Meanwhile, concerns have grown around Suryakumar’s form since taking over as India’s full-time T20I captain. Widely regarded as one of the most destructive batters in the shortest format, the Mumbai star enjoyed a remarkable run before stepping into the leadership role.

Before becoming captain, Suryakumar averaged 43.60 in T20Is with a strike rate close to 169. During that period, he smashed four centuries and 20 half-centuries while redefining fearless batting in modern T20 cricket.

However, his numbers have dipped sharply since July 2024. His average has fallen to 25.88 while the strike rate has also declined to 152.03. In 45 matches as captain, he has scored 932 runs with only six half-centuries and no hundreds.

Selectors are also believed to be concerned about his returns against stronger opposition. Against teams such as England, Pakistan and South Africa, Suryakumar managed only 197 runs across 19 innings. In contrast, he found greater success against sides including New Zealand, Bangladesh, USA and Zimbabwe.

One particularly difficult phase came during the series against England cricket team last year where scores of 0, 12, 14, 0 and 2 highlighted his struggles.

What Next for India’s T20I Captaincy?

Although India lifted major trophies during Suryakumar’s tenure including the T20 World Cup and Asia Cup, there is now growing belief within cricket circles that the selectors may be preparing to hand the reins to a new leader.

With another ICC cycle approaching and leadership discussions intensifying behind the scenes, Hardik Pandya appears firmly in pole position to lead India into its next T20I era.
