Share

At a glance

  • Warwickshire take control over Yorkshire
  • Tight games at Chelmsford, Hove and Cardiff
  • Slow going at Nottinghamshire

Day two of the latest round of County Championship matches brought plenty to talk about. Warwickshire are looking to put the game beyond Yorkshire, three matches remain too close to call, while things have moved at a slower pace at Nottinghamshire.

Warwickshire v Yorkshire

What a difference a day makes! Yorkshire resumed on 110-4 with Harry Brook and Jonny Bairstow at the wicket, looking to overhaul the 147 Warwickshire scored. That didn’t quite go to plan though as Yorkshire’s last six wickets fell for 42 runs, as they were all out for 152, a lead of just 5.

Ollie Hannon-Dalby took 4-38, as the pick of the bowlers. Jordan Thompson took 3-14 in 4.2 overs. Ethan Bamber (2-46) and Ed Barnard (1-23) took the other wickets.

Warwickshire soon surpassed that deficit, as Alex Davies (38) and Rob Yates (81) put on 95 for the first wicket. Dan Mousley scored 70, and Sam Hain (43*) and Beau Webster (18*) will resume in the morning, as Warwickshire are 267-3, a lead of 262, with seven wickets remaining. With two days to go, unless there is rain, it would look like a win for Warwickshire.

Glamorgan v Somerset

Day two at Sophia Gardens is a day that 18-year-old Tom Norton will not forget in a hurry. But more on him shortly. Firstly Somerset started the day on 337-9, and they were soon all out for 354. Mason Crane took the last wicket to fall, to end with figures of 1-32.

Glamorgan’s first innings started badly, as they were reduced to 93-5. Ben Kellaway (59) and Chris Cooke (39) put on 80 for the sixth wicket, but that was the only real partnership of the innings, as Glamorgan were all out for 229, trailing by 125. Migael Pretorius was the pick of the bowlers, with 3-50, with Lewis Gregory, Jake Ball and Craig Overton taking two apiece and Jack Leach taking 1-10.

Somerset, with a lead of 125, looked to bat Glamorgan out of the game. Back to Tom Norton now, as he took a hat-trick on debut to have Somerset reeling at 32-6 at the close of play, a lead of 157, with only 4 wickets remaining. Norton actually has 4-22 from his 6.4 overs, with Ryan Hadley taking 2-3 from his two overs.

Quick wickets in the morning session for the hosts and we could have our first result of the weekend tomorrow.

Sussex v Leicestershire

Plenty of runs on offer at Hove today, after Sussex started the day on 3-0. That soon became 18-2 as Tom Clark (8) and Danial Ibrahim (0) fell to Tom Helm in three balls.

A 178-run partnership between Daniel Hughes (136) and Jack Leaning (50) then put Sussex firmly on the front foot at 196-3. Two more quick wickets reduced them to 245-5, with Sussex aiming to get close to the visitors’ total.

An 88-run stand between John Simpson (89*) and Charlie Tear (44) edged Sussex ahead, and they eventually closed on 386-8, leading by 58 runs. Ollie Robinson (13*) will resume alongside Simpson tomorrow as Sussex look to build on that advantage.

Helm is the pick of the bowlers so far with 3-73, while Ben Green has 2-57. Ian Holland, Tom Scriven and Ajaz Patel each chipped in with a wicket. Leicestershire will be hoping to remove the final two Sussex wickets quickly before the lead grows further.

Essex v Hampshire

A cracking day of cricket at Chelmsford has left the game finely balanced after day two. Essex resumed on 51-2, trailing by 184 runs, but were soon reduced to 80-5.

Wiaan Mulder made 54 before falling with the score at 157-8, but Simon Harmer (80*) guided the tail impressively as Essex eventually closed on 273 all out, securing a lead of 38 runs.

James Fuller starred with the ball for Hampshire, taking 5-43, while Scott Currie (2-37) and Kyle Abbott (2-45) provided strong support. Liam Dawson also chipped in with 1-57.

Hampshire then looked to build what could become a challenging target, but they lost Toby Albert (1) and Tom Prest (1) before wiping out the deficit, slipping to 19-2. Nick Gubbins (35*) and Jake Lehmann (14*) steadied things late on, with Hampshire ending the day on 58-2, a lead of 20 runs.

It should be another cracking days cricket on day three.

Nottinghamshire v Surrey

An attritional day at Trent Bridge has left the game finely balanced at the end of day two. Nottinghamshire resumed on 317-7, with Joe Clarke unbeaten on 129. However, Clarke failed to add to his overnight score, while Fergus O’Neill added only 10 as the hosts slipped to 341-9.

Olly Stone (38) and Josh Tongue (37*) then frustrated the Surrey attack with a 74 run partnership before Stone became the last man out with the score on 415.

Daniel Worrall finished with 6-73 for Surrey, while Sean Abbott took 3-84 and Gus Atkinson claimed 1-80.

Surrey began their reply with a 39 run opening stand before Rory Burns fell for 25. Jamie Smith (37) was the next to go after sharing a 93 run partnership with Dom Sibley (77). Surrey closed on 211-4, still 204 runs behind Nottinghamshire. Dan Lawrence is unbeaten on 52, with Adam Thomas on 6, and Surrey will be aiming to get much closer to the hosts’ total on day three.

Fresh from his 37 not out with the bat, Josh Tongue took 2-38, while Olly Stone and Liam Patterson-White picked up a wicket each. Nottinghamshire will be hoping for early breakthroughs to build a healthy lead.
