On Sunday, Urvil Patel raced to a 13-ball fifty, scoring 65 off just 23 balls as Chennai Super Kings beat Lucknow Super Giants by five wickets. In doing so, Patel equalled the record for the fastest half-century in the Indian Premier League – set by Yashasvi Jaiswal on this day in 2023.
Picture this. It is May 11, 2023 and the Kolkata Knight Riders have set the Rajasthan Royals a gettable 150 to win and stay alive in the playoffs race. KKR skipper Nitish Rana decides to bowl his off-spin first up to tackle the left-handed Jaiswal. What followed was pure domination. Watch it here.
The Yashasvi Jaiswal Blitzkrieg
Jasiwal first came down the track and creamed the offie back over his head for six first ball. He followed that up by sweeping one for six. Next, he came down the track again and drove one through the covers. Next, he sat back and cut Rana through the offside for four. Twice. 6,6,4,4,2,4. 26 runs in the first over of the match and the tone of the run-chase was set.
Jaiswal lost his opening partner Jos Buttler to a run-out the very next over. But he would not be deterred. In fact, he responded by hitting Harshit Rana for a four and a six off the next two balls.
Fastest Fifty in IPL History
RR captain Sanju Samson was then happy to just hand over strike to the then 21-year-old and let him do his thing. Jaiswal sent Shardul Thakur to the fence off the next three balls, finding gaps through midwicket and the covers. And a single later, he had raced away to the fastest fifty in IPL history. In just 2.5 overs, with his team’s score reading 54-1.
A ball earlier and he would have equaled Yuvraj Singh, Chris Gayle and Hazratullah Zazai for the then fastest-ever fifty in T20 cricket. However, this was enough for him to beat the IPL record then jointly held by KL Rahul and Pat Cummins.
Jaiswal Sees RR Home
The quickfire half-century meant that the Royals could then see off the rest of the chase without much trouble. While the rate at which the runs came for the rest of the innings wasn’t the same, RR finished the chase off in 13.1 overs. Jaiswal ended the game with an unbeaten 47-ball 98 and a Player of the Match award to go with it.
While that fastest fifty record remained untouched for the next three years, Urvil Patel did equal that record on Sunday, nearly three years to the day.
