Gloucestershire ruled left-arm seamer David Payne out of the Vitality T20 Blast. He sustained an ankle injury playing for Sunrisers Hyderabad in the IPL.

Payne was a vital part of Gloucestershire’s 2024 Vitality T20 Blast winning campaign. He was the leading wicket taker in the competition, taking 33 wickets at 12.75. He also claimed 17 wickets as Gloucestershire defended their title last year, but the team exited at the group stage.

Prolific T20 player

Payne has become a prolific T20 player over this winter. He helped the Desert Vipers win the ILT20, taking 17 wickets at 17.76. He also played for Perth Scorchers in the Big Bash League, taking 11 wickets at 13.54.

The 35-year-old left-arm seamer had been drafted into the IPL as an injury replacement for Australian all-rounder Jack Edwards. However, Payne only managed two games himself taking two wickets for 70, only bowling five overs.

Payne “absolutely gutted”

After returning home from the IPL in early April, Payne decided that surgery on his ankle was the best option to prolong his career.

Payne wrote on Instagram “I’m absolutely gutted to be missing the Blast, and I’m sorry to all our supporters. The decision to have surgery was a incredible difficult one, and it was only taken after exhausting every possible avenue to get me back playing.

“Ultimately, this is the right decision for my long-term career, and I’m immensely thankful to all the coaches and medical staff at the club for incredible support throughout this process. I’ll be cheering the team on from the sidelines and look forward to seeing everyone at the ground soon.”
