Ben Stokes has returned to action for Durham while England continue their second Test against New Zealand without their Test captain at The Oval.
The all-rounder was named in Durham’s squad for Friday’s County Championship fixture against Northamptonshire at Banks Homes Riverside, Chester-le-Street, putting him back on the field on 19 June after a turbulent week around the England set-up.
Durham confirmed Stokes’ inclusion in Ryan Campbell’s 15-player group in their official Northamptonshire squad announcement, with the county noting he was in contention for what could be his first home appearance for the club since 2024.
Stokes Return Keeps England Question Alive
The timing gives the story its edge. Stokes and Gus Atkinson were left out of England’s second Test squad while the ECB and Cricket Regulator process continued around a team-protocol breach and nightclub incident after the first-Test win over New Zealand at Lord’s.
Joe Root has been captaining England in Stokes’ absence at The Oval, where New Zealand have put the hosts under pressure and sharpened the debate around how quickly England can bring their regular captain back into the fold.
For Durham, the immediate value is straightforward: a marquee player is available for a red-ball fixture. For England, every over Stokes bowls and every innings he plays this weekend will be watched through the lens of Trent Bridge, the captaincy, and whether the door is opening again after one of the most scrutinised weeks of his international career.
