Henry Nicholls left England facing a punishing fourth-innings chase after his unbeaten 119 gave New Zealand a 352-run lead at stumps on day three of the second Test at The Oval.
The left-hander closed on 119 from 164 balls, with Daryl Mitchell 32 not out, as New Zealand reached 252-3 in their second innings after bowling England out for 291 earlier on Friday.
Nicholls’ innings, built around 16 fours, followed a crucial 76 from Rachin Ravindra and turned England’s brief early burst into a long, draining day in the field. The tourists had already banked a 100-run first-innings advantage after making 391.
Nicholls gives New Zealand control at The Oval
England did strike twice early in New Zealand’s second innings, but Nicholls and Ravindra repaired the damage with a stand that pushed the match firmly away from Joe Root’s side.
According to The Guardian’s report from The Oval, Nicholls’ century was his 11th in Test cricket and came after his return to the side in place of Kane Williamson.
The immediate concern for England is the scoreboard pressure. New Zealand still have seven wickets in hand, two full days available, and enough control to push the target into territory that would demand something extraordinary from the hosts. Day four now shapes as a test of how long England can keep the chase alive.
