Rachin Ravindra and Henry Nicholls Put New Zealand In Control Against England At The Oval

Rachin Ravindra and Henry Nicholls pushed New Zealand into a commanding position against England on day three of the second Test at The Oval, building a century stand that stretched the visitors’ lead beyond 275. England had briefly threatened a route back into the match when Jofra Archer and Josh Tongue reduced New Zealand to 28-2, but Ravindra and Nicholls settled the innings and turned the pressure back on Joe Root’s side.

New Zealand had already taken control by bowling England out for 291 after posting 391 in their first innings. That left a 100-run advantage before the second innings began, and the Ravindra-Nicholls partnership made the hosts’ final-innings chase look increasingly severe, according to The Guardian’s live coverage from The Oval.

England Left Chasing A Huge Test Rescue

Ravindra’s unbeaten 70-plus score was built on crisp boundary hitting, while Nicholls moved past fifty with the kind of control New Zealand needed after the early wickets. Their partnership also exposed England’s missed chances and the difficulty of forcing breakthroughs once the ball softened.

For England, the situation is now as much about time and discipline as runs. Ben Stokes’ absence from the Test side has already shaped the balance of the attack, and the hosts will need either a late cluster of wickets or a major fourth-innings batting effort to prevent New Zealand from levelling the series.
