Sophia Dunkley dragged England Women out of early trouble against Scotland Women at Headingley on Saturday night, turning a shaky start into a rapid World Cup recovery.
Scotland made the sharper opening in the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup group match when Kirstie Gordon removed Amy Jones for a duck in the first over, giving Kathryn Bryce’s side the kind of breakthrough they needed in Leeds.
But Dunkley immediately changed the tone of the innings. The England No 3 attacked through the powerplay, taking on Gabriella Fontenla and Kathryn Bryce, and had raced into the 40s by the seventh over as England moved past 50 despite the early wicket.
Dunkley punishes Scotland after early chances
Scotland’s frustration was that they had chances to stop the surge. Dunkley was put down more than once, and those misses became costly as she kept finding the rope while Danni Wyatt-Hodge played the quieter hand before falling to Gordon.
The live over-by-over report from The Guardian’s England v Scotland coverage had England at 55-2 after seven overs, with Dunkley 46 not out and Alice Capsey newly arrived at the crease.
The fixture itself already carried extra weight. The ECB billed England v Scotland at Headingley as the first women’s or men’s World Cup meeting between the two nations on English soil, giving Dunkley’s counter-attack an immediate tournament-stage significance.
For England, the next phase is simple: convert Dunkley’s platform into a total big enough to protect. For Scotland, the powerplay chances they missed may already feel like the decisive passage of the night.
