Marizanne Kapp powered South Africa to a six-wicket win over India at Old Trafford on Sunday, turning a difficult chase into one of the statement results of the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup.
India had posted 158/7 after choosing to bat, but South Africa reached 161/4 in 19.1 overs as Kapp made 81 from 45 balls. The all-rounder walked in with South Africa under pressure at 25/2 and dragged the chase back towards the Proteas before accelerating through the closing stages.
The result matters because it keeps South Africa’s semi-final push alive and dents India’s momentum in Group 1. It was also listed by the ICC as South Africa’s highest successful chase in a Women’s T20 World Cup and their third-highest successful chase overall, according to the ICC’s live match update.
Kapp Turns India Pressure Into South Africa Control
India had looked well placed when Sree Charani removed Laura Wolvaardt and Annerie Dercksen in a double-wicket maiden, leaving South Africa 25/2 after the powerplay. Kapp changed the tone of the chase, reaching fifty with a sweep for four and keeping the required rate within reach.
Her innings meant India’s earlier recovery to 158/7 was not enough. South Africa’s middle order still had work to do, but Kapp’s control and timing made the final over unnecessary and gave the Proteas a result that could reshape the group race.
