Lord’s Pitch Verdict Puts 2027 World Test Championship Final Under Oval Spotlight

Lord’s could lose the 2027 World Test Championship final to The Oval after fresh concern over the surface used for England’s first Test against New Zealand.

The venue has come under renewed scrutiny after the Lord’s pitch for that match was rated “unsatisfactory” by the ICC, with the ground receiving one demerit point under the governing body’s pitch and outfield monitoring process.

The issue now appears to have wider consequences. The 2027 WTC final had been expected to return to Lord’s, but The Oval is now being lined up as the likely alternative, according to a fresh report from The Sun.

Why The Lord’s Decision Matters

The pitch debate has become more than a one-match complaint because Lord’s remains the symbolic home of Test cricket and staged the 2025 WTC final. Losing the next final would be a sharp blow to its standing, even if no final decision has yet been announced.

England captain Ben Stokes has already voiced concern over the surface used against New Zealand, with the match lasting only 166 overs and producing extreme seam movement and uneven bounce.

For the ICC, ECB and MCC, the question is now whether Lord’s can give the next showpiece final a surface that feels worthy of the occasion. Until that is settled, The Oval has a real chance to take one of cricket’s biggest dates across London.
