Izzy Sharp and Brooke Halliday kept New Zealand’s ICC Women’s T20 World Cup defence alive in Bristol on Tuesday, steering the White Ferns to a six-wicket win over Scotland that ended Scotland’s semi-final hopes.

Scotland posted 131/7 after being sent in at the County Ground, with Darcey Carter carrying the innings through an unbeaten 72 from 52 balls. New Zealand’s chase briefly lurched when Kathryn Bryce removed Melie Kerr and Isabella Gaze early, but Sharp and Halliday rebuilt the innings with the authority the champions needed.

Sharp and Halliday turn must-win chase

The decisive passage was a 101-run fourth-wicket stand, which took New Zealand from danger to 132/4 in 18.2 overs. Sharp made 62 from 43 balls before Rachel Slater bowled her late on, while Halliday’s unbeaten 41 ensured there was no final twist.

The ICC match report confirmed New Zealand’s six-wicket win kept them alive in Group B and knocked Scotland out of contention.

Sophie Devine’s return also mattered. She struck twice in her first over and finished alongside Kerr as a key brake on Scotland after Carter’s fast start. New Zealand still have work to do, but this was the minimum result delivered under pressure.

For Scotland, Carter’s innings was a high point in a campaign that has pushed established sides harder than the table will show. The result, though, leaves the remaining Group B contenders with New Zealand back in the argument.
