James Coles has earned a maiden England call-up for the five-match T20I series against India, with Harry Brook named to lead a 17-player squad.
The Sussex all-rounder has been included for a series that gives England an immediate white-ball reset against the reigning T20 world champions. The announcement places Coles alongside established names including Jos Buttler, Jofra Archer, Sam Curran, Adil Rashid, Phil Salt, Will Jacks and Rehan Ahmed.
England’s squad also features Sonny Baker, Tom Banton, Jacob Bethell, Jordan Cox, Liam Dawson, Saqib Mahmood, Josh Tongue and Luke Wood, giving Brook a broad mix of pace, spin, wicketkeeping cover and lower-order hitting.
Coles call-up gives England another all-round option
The significance is not just that Coles is new to the senior set-up. England are asking a young all-rounder to step into a high-profile India series at a time when roles in their T20 side remain highly competitive.
Coles was part of England’s squad at the 2022 ICC Men’s Under-19 Cricket World Cup, and his elevation now gives the selectors another left-field option before a sequence of major limited-overs assignments.
The series also comes with scheduling pressure. Brook is set to captain the side, while several multi-format players are being balanced around England’s red-ball commitments. That makes the squad shape as important as the headline call-up.
England confirmed the full 17-player group according to the ICC’s squad announcement, with the India series now carrying extra intrigue for supporters watching how quickly Coles can turn selection into a clear role.
