Deandra Dottin gave West Indies one of the few defiant moments of their ICC Women’s T20 World Cup semi-final defeat to Australia, but her pre-match medical scare has now become the sharper selection concern.
The ICC confirmed Dottin was carried off before the first semi-final at The Oval, only to return at No.8 with West Indies 83/6 and strike an unbeaten 26 from 16 balls. Her hitting lifted Hayley Matthews’ side to 125/7, a total that at least forced Australia to complete the job rather than simply coast through the innings.
West Indies Need Clarity Fast
West Indies head coach Shane Deitz described the issue as a medical matter and said after the innings that Dottin was fine, but the timing matters. This was not a routine knock or a late-innings gamble. It was a visible scare before a World Cup knockout match, followed by a player being asked to salvage a collapsing innings.
Australia still won by eight wickets, with Beth Mooney and Ash Gardner taking the chase to 127/2 inside 13 overs. ReadCricket has already covered Mooney’s role in Australia’s final surge, but West Indies leave London with a different issue.
If Dottin is available without restriction, her power remains central to their next phase. If there is any lingering doubt, Matthews and West Indies must reassess how much late-overs responsibility they can keep placing on their most explosive all-rounder.
