India’s return to Sri Lanka for a Test series has sharpened the next stage of Shubman Gill’s red-ball reset.
The ICC confirmed on Thursday that India will play two Tests in Sri Lanka in August, with both matches counting towards the 2025-27 World Test Championship cycle.
The opener is scheduled for Galle from 15-19 August before the series moves to the Sinhalese Sports Club in Colombo from 23-27 August. It will be India’s first Test assignment in Sri Lanka since their 3-0 sweep in 2017.
Why The Short Series Carries Weight
India are listed fifth in the WTC table, with Sri Lanka one place behind, turning a two-match tour into a direct points squeeze rather than a low-risk calendar stop.
Gill’s leadership has already become a central thread in India’s white-ball planning, with ReadCricket previously detailing his ODI captaincy call for the England tour.
The red-ball version will be judged differently. Galle’s surface places immediate pressure on India’s batting tempo and spin balance, while Colombo offers little time to repair damage if the first Test slips away.
For Sri Lanka, the timing is just as sharp. A home series against India brings commercial weight, WTC points and a chance to drag a rival back into the crowded middle of the table.
