Heather Knight To Retire After Historic Lord’s Test Against India

England’s most-capped women’s cricketer Heather Knight has announced she will retire from international cricket at the end of the historic Lord’s Test against India, bringing a 16-year, 320-cap England career to a close.

According to ESPNcricinfo, the World Cup-winning former captain confirmed her decision on Sunday morning, midway through the first women’s Test ever staged at Lord’s. Knight, who made her England debut in 2010, bows out as the record appearance-maker in England women’s history with 320 caps across 15 Tests, 160 ODIs and 145 T20Is, scoring 7,988 international runs with six centuries.

Knight said she was “happy and content” with the decision and that it feels like the “perfect timing” to step away, in quotes carried by news agency IANS. “After this summer, I probably feel that I haven’t got the drive and energy to keep going, keep doing what you need to do to be an international cricketer,” she added.

Tammy Beaumont Joins Knight In Lord’s Farewell

Knight will not walk away alone. Opener Tammy Beaumont is also retiring from international cricket after this match, meaning two pillars of England’s 2017 World Cup triumph depart together at the ground where Knight lifted that trophy as captain after beating India in the final.

Knight captained England 199 times between 2016 and 2025, winning 134 matches, before handing over to current skipper Nat Sciver-Brunt. In Canberra in 2020 she became the first England player to score centuries in all three international formats.

Her farewell match is delicately poised, with India firmly on top after seizing control of the historic Lord’s Test on day two, when England had resumed 264 behind despite Sophie Ecclestone’s record-setting effort. Knight intends to continue playing domestic cricket, but her international story now ends at the ground where it burned brightest.
