The Australian cricket setup has omitted Marnus Labuschagne from the upcoming white-ball series to guarantee a dedicated red-ball preparation window before the South Africa tour.
The right-hander kept his place in the 16-player touring party despite a prolonged lean run, having retained his red-ball spot for the critical upcoming campaign.
He has averaged 24.69 across his last 43 Test innings and has not registered a century since July 2023. Recent scores of 1, 31, and 4 against Bangladesh have amplified scrutiny on his position at number three.
White-Ball Absence Brings Clarity
Chief selector George Bailey believes removing limited-overs duties will aid technical adjustments ahead of the opening fixture at Kingsmead on October 9.
“Clearly, there’s potentially a simplification (of his preparation), or an ability to focus purely on red-ball cricket for him, in the fact that he won’t be in the one-day series leading up to it, so that that may be a benefit,” Bailey said.
Cooper Connolly and Josh Inglis join the travelling group as genuine alternatives for the top order should changes occur. Bailey confirmed Connolly was picked primarily as a batter and possesses the required profile.
“I think he will be able to [bat in the top three]. Whether that’s now, whether that’s in the future. He’s still so young in his career, but I think his ability to bat in a range of positions will continue to grow as he gets more and more experience,” Bailey added.
Selection Pressures Mount Globally
Scrutiny over established positions is echoing globally, mirroring how Ishan Kishan scored heavily to challenge India’s wicketkeeping hierarchy.
The series begins in Durban next month before scheduled fixtures at St George’s Park and Newlands.
