The PCA awards Craig Overton and Sophie Luff won this week confirmed Somerset’s grip on English domestic cricket’s top individual honours. Overton claimed the Professional Cricketers’ Association’s Men’s Player of the Year title, while Luff took the equivalent women’s prize, giving the county both headline awards at the same ceremony.
Overton beat Joe Clarke, George Hill and Dan Lawrence to his award after a County Championship season built on three first-class hundreds and a bowling average under 20. Luff’s win made her the first non-international to take the women’s prize since 2021.
Official Details and Voting Outcome
This year’s PCA awards, Craig Overton and Sophie Luff among them, were decided entirely by votes from fellow professionals across the men’s and women’s domestic game.
“It’s a phenomenal feeling,” Overton said. “To be chosen by your peers to win this award is very special, it means so much to me.”
Luff’s win carried similar weight. She held off three shortlisted internationals, Maia Bouchier, Sophia Dunkley and Mady Villiers, to take the women’s prize.
“I’ve always been a leader that wants to lead from the front, but I think people are seeing that play out in games now,” Luff said. “I think this year I’ve just showcased what I’m capable of.”
Fuller detail on both results can be found in the BBC Sport coverage of the PCA awards and in the Sky Sports report on the headline accolades.
Overton and Luff Impact Domestic Season
Overton’s season was built on consistency with both bat and ball. He scored three first-class hundreds and averaged under 20 with the ball in the County Championship, numbers that sit alongside Somerset’s recent County Championship encounters.
Luff scored heavily across formats during the summer and averaged over 40 in the One-Day Cup after Somerset moved her to the top of the batting order. She also won The Hundred with Trent Rockets. Our coverage of their recent domestic campaign reflections showed how much the shift paid off for both player and county.
“I’ve had a new role at Somerset opening the batting and it’s safe to say it’s gone pretty well and I’ve probably unlocked something to bring the best out of me as a player. I’m so grateful to all my team-mates and coaches at Somerset that have supported me,” Luff said.
Young Player Winners and Special Honours
Sonny Baker and Tilly Corteen-Coleman won the PCA’s two young player of the year awards, recognising standout performances from the next generation of professionals coming through the domestic game.
Heather Knight collected the PCA Outstanding Contribution Award following her retirement from international cricket, while Tammy Beaumont received an ECB Special Merit Award for her career in the England shirt. Both honours underline how widely recognition spread across the professional game this year, even as Somerset’s pair took the two biggest titles of the night.
