Sonny Baker on PCA Award: It Always Means More From Peers

Sonny Baker has become the first Hampshire player to win the PCA Young Player of the Year award, after a breakthrough 2026 season. The 23-year-old fast bowler lifted The Hundred with Manchester Super Giants, reached T20 Blast Finals Day with Hampshire, and made his Test debut against New Zealand. Peers across the county game voted for him, and the Sonny Baker PCA Award now sits alongside those achievements as proof of how far he has come this year.

“It’s awesome (to win the award),” Baker said, reflecting on a trophy decided by the players he faces week in, week out.

Official Details and Voting Recognition

Baker’s prize makes him the first Hampshire player to take the award. Speaking to the BBC Sport report, he explained why recognition from fellow professionals carries extra weight for him.

“It always means more when it’s coming from guys who you respect and play against.”

He also pointed to the list of previous winners when asked what the honour means to him.

“It’s a massive honour for me to get voted by the rest of the guys and there’s some pretty cool names on the trophy – some guys on there have gone on to have phenomenal careers, so I’m very proud.”

Breakthrough 2026 Season and Tactical Impact

Baker’s year brought silverware both at home and abroad. He won The Hundred with Manchester Super Giants, then helped Hampshire reach domestic T20 Blast action on Finals Day, underlining his value across white-ball cricket.

The season’s standout moment came in the Test arena, where he earned his first cap against New Zealand. He carried that form straight into England colours in white-ball cricket too, taking figures of 3-12 in his first T20 appearance against Sri Lanka under head coach Brendon McCullum. That spell arrived as the domestic calendar moved through its closing weeks, a stretch that also brought end of the 2026 season updates elsewhere in the county game.

England Selection and Winter Schedule Timeline

Baker’s form has already earned him a place in England’s senior plans. He was named in the ODI tri-series squad for Pakistan on Thursday, extending his involvement with the national side into the winter.

The schedule ahead is busy. England’s winter features white-ball fixtures against Australia before a Test series against South Africa. Baker said he is focused on managing that workload in stages rather than looking too far ahead.

“I think the beauty of it is actually trying not to look too far forward because there is so much on.”

He broke his approach down in more detail.

“For me the main thing is just trying to work on each section of the winter and then the year ahead and what am I trying to get out of it.”

Baker added that steady, incremental progress remains his priority as he builds on the Sonny Baker PCA Award and the season that earned it.

“If you keep stacking those periods of time on top of each other you’ll continually improve and that’s the main thing for me is just trying to keep improving.”
