Mumbai Indians’ bowling woes continued today as they lost to Sunrisers Hyderabad by six wickets. Setting SRH 244 to win, Hyderabad got them with eight balls to spare.
Mumbai post impressive total
Mumbai Indians won the toss at home and decided to bat first. A solid start by Will Jacks (46 off 22)in a 93 run opening partnership with Ryan Rickelton.
Rickelton batted through the innings for 123 off 55 balls (10 x 4’s, 8 x 6’s), the fastest century for Mumbai Indians. It was also the highest individual score, surpassing Sanath Jayasuriya’s 114* in the inaugural season in 2008.
After Will Jacks’ 46, Captain Hardik Pandya scored 31 off 15 balls, and Naman Dhir scored 22 off 17, as they ended their 20 overs on 243-5 – an impressive and imposing total. That total was the highest total at the Wankhede Stadium.
Only Eshan Malinga had reasonable figures of 1-29 from his 4, Pat Cummins (0-39) and Praful Hinge (2-54) were the best of the rest, but that didn’t take much doing. Malinga is now the leader for the Purple Cap with 15 wickets, one ahead of Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Jofra Archer and Anshul Kamboj.
A case of not taking chances.
Sunrisers began their innings with a burst of early fireworks, racing to 129 for the first wicket. Travis Head led the charge with a blistering 76 off 30 balls, though his innings had its share of luck—he was dropped three times and even edged one to Ryan Rickelton behind the stumps, but the Mumbai side failed to notice the faint nick.
Runs continued to flow as the Mumbai bowlers struggled to get their lines right. Jasprit Bumrah (0-54) was hit for 14 off his first over, Trent Boult’s first two overs went for 29 and Will Jacks’ only over went for 19, as the openers scored 62 in four overs.
Abhishek Sharma, currently leading the Orange Cap race, continued his strong form with a brisk 45 off 24 balls. He became the first wicket to fall at 129, but the score quickly slipped to 133 for 3 as Ishan Kishan was dismissed for a first-ball duck, and Travis Head was finally caught by Will Jacks.
Late Surge Seals Dominant Total
Heinrich Klaasen, second in the race for the Orange Cap, continued the onslaught with 65* off 30 balls. Salil Arora was also there at the end with 30 off 10. Nitish Kumar Reddy was the only other wicket to fall for 21 off 17.
Am Ghazanfar was the best of a bad bunch for Mumbai Indians, with 2-51 from his four overs. Trent Boult (1-41) and Hardik Pandya (1-39) were the other wicket takers.
Next up for Mumbai Indians (9th) is a trip to Chennai to take on the Chennai Super Kings (6th)on Saturday. Sunrisers Hyderabad, who move up to third, have a home game with the Kolkata Knight Riders (8th)on Sunday.
