  • Mumbai Indians rise to 7th with 4 points but play off hopes remain uncertain
  • Hardik Pandya form questioned after modest all round display vs Gujarat Titans

Mumbai Indians finally have something to hold on to in the Indian Premier League 2026 season, but the sense of relief is tempered by a reality that remains far from comfortable. Even with captain Hardik Pandya overseeing an emphatic win over Gujarat Titans, the bigger picture suggests a campaign still hanging in the balance.

The victory, their second in five matches, takes Mumbai to 4 points and up to seventh place. It is a step forward, though only a narrow one, with the side just one point clear of the bottom and still with significant ground to make up in the race for the play offs. View the full table here.

Mumbai Indians Climb Table but Play-Off Hopes Remain Distant

For Pandya, the evening offered little personal redemption. The all rounder contributed 15 off 16 balls with the bat before falling to Mohammed Siraj, an innings that never quite gathered momentum when his side needed authority. With the ball, his solitary over proved expensive, conceding 18 runs, although he did manage to pick up a wicket.

Captain Hardik Pandya Struggles to Make Decisive Impact

It is this limited influence that continues to draw attention. Pandya’s overall returns this season remain modest, with just 96 runs from five matches, and his impact across phases of the game has yet to match his reputation.

His captaincy too remains under the microscope, particularly in how he utilises struggling strike bowler Jasprit Bumrah during key moments. Though Bumrah will also be breathing a sigh of relief after claiming his first wicket in 2026 against the Titans.

Aakash Chopra Questions Lack of Match Winning Performances

Former India batter, Aakash Chopra, had earlier voiced pointed concerns on his YouTube channel prior to the Gujarat match, questioning the absence of a defining contribution from the Mumbai skipper in recent outings:

“You have corrected the batting order now. I won’t talk about Surya because he played many match winning knocks last time, but Hardik, I don’t remember when the last match winning knock you played was.

We have seen many good cameos, but that match winning 70 or 80 runs where you win the match alone, Hardik is capable of that.”

Call for Fearless Approach and Fresh Ideas

Chopra also stressed the need for a shift in mindset and approach as Mumbai attempt to revive their campaign:

“If you get less than that repeatedly, you think this is the time when Hardik does what he can do, because you are capable of doing that. They need fresh ideas and freshness, a little fearless approach, and Sherfane Rutherford should bat slightly up the order.

All of that is required because the truth is that the five time champions, the Mumbai Indians, are at No. 10 at this point in time.”

Momentum Builds but Mumbai Indians Still Searching for Consistency

There were far more encouraging signs for Mumbai Indians in this outing, with a convincing win over Gujarat Titans suggesting that some of the early season issues are beginning to be addressed. The performance carried a sharper edge, with both bat and ball showing greater intent and cohesion across key phases.

A major positive came in the form of Jasprit Bumrah, who claimed his first wicket of the campaign, a moment that could prove significant as the tournament progresses. His return to the wickets column adds both confidence and balance to a bowling attack that has been searching for rhythm.

There is now a growing sense that this result could mark a step in the right direction for Mumbai’s season. However, while the team performance pointed upwards, the spotlight remains firmly on captain Hardik Pandya. His individual contributions continue to fall short of expectations, and his influence on matches remains under scrutiny.

For Mumbai Indians, the challenge is clear. This win may have reignited belief, but a single result will not be enough to undo a slow start. Consistency will be key, and they will need their captain to rediscover his authority if they are to turn early promise into a genuine push for the play-offs.
