Cameron Green has admitted that after Kolkata Knight Riders mounted a spirited comeback to stay in contention for the playoffs, the three-time IPL winners took too long to figure out the right players for the right roles. In a high-scoring match in Kolkata on Saturday, KKR defeated second-place Gujarat Titans to move up to seventh place and maintain their aspirations following a dismal start to the 2026 Indian Premier League.
At the Eden Gardens, KKR defeated Gujarat Titans by 29 runs, their fifth victory in the previous six games. Although the Kolkata Knight Riders are now on a great run, their prospects of qualifying for the playoffs are still in jeopardy because of how poorly they started the 2026 IPL season.
All-rounder Cameron Green acknowledged that KKR has taken a bit too long to identify the right players for the proper roles in the squad after the team went winless for as many as six games to begin the season.
“There was no panic behind closed doors,” Green told JioHotstar about that early period. “I think it just took us a while, maybe a bit too long, to figure out the right roles and get the right people in the right positions.”

Cameron Green reveals how KKR finally found his best role in IPL 2026
This season, Green has been a reflection of KKR’s success. He was having a completely forgettable time with bat and ball, and many were wondering why he didn’t bowl in the first few games. But in the most recent games, the Australian has routinely delivered the goods with both bat and ball. Green hit an undefeated 52 off 28 balls and claimed a wicket in KKR’s 29-run victory against the Gujarat Titans on Saturday.
“I like to think I can bat in a few positions, but it’s about what is best for the team. Ajinkya Rahane has been awesome at the top for us, and the same goes for Angkrish (Raghuvanshi), our youngster at No. 3. So, it’s just about where I fit into the team, and No. 4 seems to be it. We’ve found that now, so we’re giving ourselves a little chance here,” he said.

KKR to massive win over Gujarat Titans
Despite many missed catches from the Gujarat Titans, Green and Angkrish Raghuvanshi’s fifties enabled KKR to reach 247 for the loss of two wickets in 20 overs. Finn Allen has subsequently blasted over 50 in only 21 balls after being dropped by Mohammed Siraj when he was on 33 off 17 balls. At the other end, Raghuvanshi effectively switched strikes to maintain KKR’s momentum.
Following Allen’s wicket, Raghuvanshi assumed leadership, and Green quickly joined the group. At the end of the innings break, Green was on 52 off 28 balls and Raghuvanshi was undefeated at 82 off 44 balls. For the third wicket, the two had amassed 108 runs in 53 balls.
