Ben Stokes returned to County Championship action for Durham on Friday and claimed a wicket after an 18-over spell against Northamptonshire at Chester-le-Street. The England captain was playing while England struggled in the second Test against New Zealand at the Kia Oval, with his domestic outing immediately feeding the debate over how quickly he could come back into the Test side.
Stokes was left out of the Oval Test alongside Gus Atkinson after an ECB protocol issue, but his Durham shift was not a soft re-entry. He bowled with sustained pace, used the short ball aggressively and eventually made the breakthrough late in the day.
Stokes fitness gives England a live selection question
According to The Guardian’s county cricket live coverage, Durham coach Ryan Campbell suggested Stokes could soon be back with England after showing the same intensity around the county setup.
The timing matters because England are under pressure in the New Zealand series and Joe Root has been leading in Stokes’ absence. A fit, bowling Stokes changes the balance of the side, even before his captaincy influence is considered.
Durham did not dominate the day, with Ricardo Vasconcelos unbeaten on 181 for Northamptonshire, but Stokes’ workload was the headline. If England wanted proof that his competitive edge remains intact, Chester-le-Street offered it in plain sight.
