Leicestershire Beat Yorkshire By Innings And 39 Runs For First Division One Win Since 2003

Leicestershire have beaten Yorkshire by an innings and 39 runs at Grace Road to claim their first County Championship Division One victory since September 2003.

The result was sealed on the third afternoon at the Uptonsteel County Ground, where Yorkshire were bowled out for 229 in their second innings after starting the day 32-2 and still 236 runs behind. The scale of the defeat was confirmed in Yorkshire’s own match report, which said Leicestershire were stronger “in all facets of the game” as they ended a run of four straight defeats.

Rehan Ahmed and Nick Kelly had already put Leicestershire in control with centuries in a first-innings total of 453, after Yorkshire had been dismissed for 185. From there, Alex Green, Josh Davey and Ajaz Patel shared the final-day damage with three wickets apiece to close out a landmark red-ball win.

Grace Road result changes Leicestershire’s Division One mood

For Leicestershire, this was more than a routine county result. Their return to the top tier has been defined by the need to prove they can turn competitive positions into wins, and this was the most emphatic evidence yet.

Yorkshire’s resistance came mainly from Dan Moriarty, who made an unbeaten 51, and Dom Bess, who added 40, but the visitors never built the partnership needed to make Leicestershire bat again.

The win gives Leicestershire 23 points and a badly needed reset in the Division One table. For Yorkshire, a third defeat in eight matches leaves them waiting on other results before the championship break.

Full match details were published in Yorkshire’s Leicestershire v Yorkshire match report.
