Jamie Smith And Shoaib Bashir Recalled As England Reset For New Zealand Decider

Jamie Smith and Shoaib Bashir have been recalled to England’s XI for the New Zealand series decider at Trent Bridge. The pair return alongside Ben Stokes and Gus Atkinson as England make four changes for a Test that now carries extra pressure after the heavy defeat at The Oval.

Smith is back as wicketkeeper after paternity leave, while Bashir returns as the frontline spinner in a side that also restores Stokes to the captaincy and Atkinson to the pace attack. James Rew, Jordan Cox, Matthew Fisher and Sonny Baker drop out, leaving England with a more established balance.

England move back towards their strongest available side

The selection tells its own story. England have chosen experience, balance and a more familiar spine after a disrupted fortnight, with Stokes and Brendon McCullum also having cleared the air before training.

Smith’s return should tighten the middle order and the keeping role, while Bashir gives England a specialist spin option in conditions expected to be hot. Atkinson’s comeback adds another proven wicket-taking threat alongside Jofra Archer and Josh Tongue.

The full XI and the background to England’s reshuffle were detailed in The Guardian’s report from Trent Bridge, with the decider now shaping as both a selection reset and a leadership stress test.
