Brook Fifty Puts England Decider Back On Knife-Edge

Harry Brook dragged England back into the third Test at Trent Bridge after New Zealand’s middle-session strikes threatened to turn the series decider sharply away from Ben Stokes’ side.

The ECB’s live key-moments feed for the third Rothesay Test showed Brook reaching 50 on Saturday afternoon, after England had already lost Joe Root lbw and Stokes bowled by Zak Foulkes. It left Brook carrying the fight in a match England had re-entered through Ben Duckett’s 113 on day two.

Brook Gives England Their Counterpunch

Brook’s tempo matters because this Test has moved in bursts rather than long, controlled phases. New Zealand chose to bat first, according to the ICC match centre, but England’s response has depended on aggressive individual stands rather than a settled top-order squeeze.

Root’s dismissal was the pressure point. With Stokes also removed, Brook’s half-century prevented New Zealand from turning a cluster of wickets into full control of the Crowe-Thorpe Trophy finale.

Why This Session Carries Weight

England entered the match needing a cleaner finish to a series that has exposed their volatility. Duckett’s hundred gave them a platform; Brook’s fifty kept it alive. The wider question is whether England can turn momentum into a first-innings position strong enough to protect a stretched attack later in the match.

For New Zealand, Foulkes’ breakthrough against Stokes and the earlier Root lbw showed their plan was still biting. Brook’s innings has not settled the Test, but it has stopped the innings drifting into damage limitation.

That is why this was more than a fluent fifty. It was England’s refusal to let the decider become a one-way New Zealand surge.
