Beth Mooney has shifted Australia from semi-final survivors to final pace-setters, turning a controlled chase against West Indies into a selection statement before Sunday’s Lord’s decider.
Australia’s eight-wicket win at The Oval was built first by spin, then finished with authority by Mooney’s unbeaten 61 from 36 balls. Cricket Australia reported that Ashleigh Gardner, Georgia Wareham and Sophie Molineux each took two wickets as West Indies were held to 7-125.
Mooney Removes The Chase From Doubt
Mooney’s innings was not merely clean finishing. It was a warning about Australia’s ability to kill a knockout match before pressure can grow. Supported by Gardner’s unbeaten 35 from 20 balls, Australia reached 127-2 with seven overs unused.
That margin matters. It was listed as the biggest win by balls remaining in a Women’s T20 World Cup knockout match, a 42-ball statement that gives Australia recovery time and psychological control before facing either England or South Africa.
Perry Fitness Still Shapes The Final
The only complication was Ellyse Perry leaving the chase on two with quad awareness. Molineux later framed the move as precautionary, with Perry available to return if needed.
That leaves Australia in a strong but delicate position. Perry’s presence balances the XI, but the semi-final also showed they are not dependent on one senior name. Mooney’s command and Gardner’s all-round rhythm have given the defending standard-setters a cleaner route to Lord’s than their recent knockout scars suggested.
