Rain Delay Turns Iyer-Abhishek Surge Into England Chase Wait

India’s first T20I against England has become a race against Durham rain after Shreyas Iyer and Abhishek Sharma powered the tourists to 189-7.

India chose to bat at Banks Homes Riverside and were almost immediately in trouble, with Sanju Samson and Ishan Kishan gone inside the first three overs. Abhishek changed the tone brutally, reaching a 20-ball fifty and finishing with 59 before Sam Curran trapped him lbw.

Iyer Gives India Control Before Covers Arrive

Iyer then gave the innings its spine. The India captain made 68 before Saqib Mahmood ended his stay, with Mahmood’s 3-33 dragging England back into the contest just as India threatened to break 200.

Shivam Dube’s unbeaten 42 still pushed India to a strong total, but the weather immediately became the defining factor. The Guardian’s live report had India at 189-7 from 20 overs before heavier rain delayed England’s chase, while ESPN’s match centre also listed the game as delayed by rain.

The selection picture also stayed conservative. Vaibhav Sooryavanshi remained on the bench, a call that followed ReadCricket’s earlier selection watch, while England’s published XI had Harry Brook captaining a side containing Jos Buttler, Sam Curran, Adil Rashid and Luke Wood.

For India, the immediate story is not just the scoreboard. It is whether Iyer’s recovery from 6-2 becomes a winning platform, or whether the rain strips the series opener of its chase altogether.
