Dawson Recall Gives Brook India Opener A Spin Edge

England have confirmed their XI for Wednesday’s first Vitality IT20 against India, and Liam Dawson’s inclusion gives Harry Brook a sharper tactical lever than the headline team sheet first suggests.

The ECB confirmed that Phil Salt and Jos Buttler will sit above Brook, Jacob Bethell, Tom Banton, Sam Curran and Will Jacks, with Dawson joining Adil Rashid, Saqib Mahmood and Luke Wood in the bowling group for the Chester-le-Street opener.

Dawson gives England a second spin route

That matters because this is not just another Brook captaincy checkpoint, especially with England’s leadership debate sharpened by Ben Stokes’ Test farewell. ReadCricket has already examined how Jofra Archer’s absence changes England’s pace balance, but Dawson’s selection points to a broader answer: protect Rashid, shorten India’s middle-over hitting window and keep Curran or Jacks flexible at the back end.

India arrive after a 2-0 defeat in Ireland, according to the ECB, yet their batting depth still makes Brook’s first call significant. England’s XI carries more than 650 caps, but the Dawson-Rashid combination gives it control as well as experience.

The five-match series opens at Banks Homes Riverside at 5.30pm before moving to Old Trafford, Trent Bridge, Bristol and Southampton. For Brook, the first test is whether England’s extra spin option can turn a selection call into immediate pressure.
