Shreyas Iyer Appointed Captain As India Announce T20 Squad For West Indies Series

The Board of Control for Cricket in India has appointed Shreyas Iyer to captain a spin-heavy T20 international squad against West Indies, balancing player workloads during a congested autumn schedule.

Tilak Varma will serve as vice-captain for the five-match series, which begins in Lucknow on 6 October. The 15-player group features a formidable spin attack containing Kuldeep Yadav, Axar Patel, Washington Sundar and Ravi Bishnoi to exploit home conditions.

Arshdeep Singh, Prince Yadav and Mayank Yadav provide the specialist pace options. Jasprit Bumrah remains absent from the bilateral series to focus on his commitments at the tournament in Japan. Ishan Kishan and Sanju Samson have both been selected as wicketkeepers.

Separate Squads Manage Schedule Clash

The T20 international series follows a three-match 50-over contest that prompted a 50-over selection rethink from the national committee. The final one-day international in New Chandigarh on 3 October clashes directly with the medal matches in Japan, forcing administrators to field separate groups across the concurrent events.

Administrators also confirmed updates to the travelling party for Japan, with Vipraj Nigam replacing Varun Chakaravarthy after the spinner sustained a side strain. Nitish Kumar Reddy has been withdrawn from that setup to join the one-day international squad.

The T20 international tour moves from Lucknow to Ranchi on 9 October and Indore on 11 October. Hyderabad will host the fourth fixture on 14 October before the series concludes in Bengaluru on 17 October.
