England have handed Josh Tongue his one-day international debut, naming the Nottinghamshire quick alongside a returning Jofra Archer for the series opener against India at Edgbaston on Tuesday.
According to Sky Sports, Tongue’s call-up rewards a strong run of form through the summer, with Harry Brook’s side naming him at No. 10 in a bowling attack built around Archer’s new-ball pace and a three-pronged spin option of Adil Rashid, Liam Dawson and Will Jacks. Jacob Bethell opens the batting alongside Ben Duckett, with Jos Buttler keeping wicket.
Tongue’s Ashes Pedigree Fuels New-Ball Test Alongside Archer
Tongue arrives in ODI colours off the back of a standout Ashes tour, where he finished with 18 wickets in three Tests, including a Player-of-the-Match haul of 7-89 at Melbourne and a five-wicket return at Adelaide — form that earned him a two-year multi-format central contract from the ECB in November. He was also England’s leading wicket-taker in last summer’s home Test series against India, with 19 scalps.
The uncapped one-day bowler’s promotion continues a breakout year that began when he and Archer combined for four wickets to seal a record England win over India in the fourth T20I at Bristol, part of a series that finished 4-0 to the hosts. Bethell’s promotion to open alongside Duckett gives Brook’s side a fresh look at the top of the order, while India have recalled Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli and Jasprit Bumrah for the tour.
How Tongue’s raw pace from the Ashes heat of Australia translates to English one-day conditions will be an early subplot as the three-match series against India gets under way.
