England vs India 1st ODI: Rohit Sharma And Virat Kohli Return At Edgbaston

Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli are set to return to international cricket on Tuesday when England face India in the 1st ODI at Edgbaston, the opening match of a three-game series.

The BCCI named both senior batters in its 15-man squad for the 50-over leg of the tour, with Shubman Gill as captain, Shreyas Iyer as his deputy and Jasprit Bumrah back in the attack, though Kohli’s inclusion was listed as subject to fitness clearance. According to Inside Sport, Kohli and Rohit have been putting in long net sessions in Birmingham ahead of the opener. The touring party was reshuffled on Sunday when Prince Yadav and Ravi Bishnoi were called up as replacements for the injured Harshit Rana and Varun Chakravarthy.

Shubman Gill Targets ODI Response After England’s T20I Sweep

India arrive at Edgbaston needing a reset. England completed a 4-0 T20I series sweep in Southampton on Saturday, a result ESPNcricinfo noted carried them above India to the top of the ICC T20I rankings, with Jos Buttler’s 131 setting up the decider.

The 50-over series moves quickly: Sophia Gardens in Cardiff stages the second ODI on Thursday before the finale at Lord’s on Sunday 19 July, per the BCCI’s tour schedule.

For Gill, the immediate task is clear — harness the experience of Rohit and Kohli, who remain central to India’s 50-over plans, and stop England’s white-ball momentum before the series slips away as fast as the T20Is did.
