Essex travel to the Utilita Bowl on Wednesday looking to end Hampshire Hawks’ interest in a return to Edgbaston, as the Vitality Blast quarter-finals get under way in Southampton.
According to a fresh preview from Essex Cricket’s official website, Simon Harmer’s side arrive full of confidence after thrashing Surrey by eight wickets at the Kia Oval on Sunday to book their quarter-final spot, with a semi-final place at Edgbaston awaiting the winners of Wednesday’s tie.
Matt Critchley’s Spin Form Puts Hampshire Hawks On Alert
Leg-spinner Matt Critchley followed up figures of 4-16 against Hampshire 48 hours earlier with a further 3-16 against Surrey, helping bowl the hosts out for just 123 as Essex completed their qualification with three balls of their 20 overs unused. Charlie Bennett chipped in with 2-13, while Michael Pepper’s unbeaten 71 steered the chase home.
Hampshire, who finished top of the South Group, will start as favourites on home soil despite a heavy seven-wicket defeat to Essex at Chelmsford in the penultimate round, with captain James Vince and seamer Scott Currie, the county’s leading wicket-taker this campaign with 21 scalps, having led the way through the rest of the group stage. Essex’s own leading run-scorer this season, Paul Walter (372), gives the visitors a similar focal point, with Jordan Cox, who has been unavailable for much of the campaign, adding further depth to a squad chasing its first quarter-final win since 2023. Essex’s route to Wednesday follows a Blast quarter-final picture that only became clear last week.
Wednesday’s schedule marks a change under the competition’s revamped 2026 format, with all four Vitality Blast quarter-finals staged on the same day, according to The Cricket Paper. Northamptonshire Steelbacks host Gloucestershire and Yorkshire welcome Somerset in the other South and North ties.
Elsewhere, Nottinghamshire Outlaws host Surrey at Trent Bridge in a repeat of the 2020 final, with Scotland’s George Munsey, Nottinghamshire’s leading run-scorer this campaign on 477, the man Surrey must contain if they are to end a long wait for Blast silverware. All four winners advance to Finals Day at Edgbaston on Saturday.
