Michael Vaughan Brydon Carse Verdict: Punish To Send A Shiver

Michael Vaughan Brydon Carse reaction: the former England captain has called for a punishment that “sends a shiver down the whole England cricket team” after the Durham seamer became the latest contracted England player caught up in a late-night incident. He was speaking on BBC Radio 5 Live, hours after Carse was withdrawn from the squad for Thursday’s second Test at Lord’s.

Michael Vaughan Brydon Carse verdict: ‘the only punishment that will really hurt’

Carse was briefly placed under arrest, then de-arrested, on a night out in Derby at the weekend, and the independent Cricket Regulator is now investigating, BBC Sport reported. He has not played for England since January, and was replaced at Lord’s by Hampshire seamer Sonny Baker. BBC Sport counts eight contracted players caught up in late-night incidents over the past year, more than a quarter of England’s 30 central contracts.

“Someone is going to have to get a punishment that sends a shiver down the whole England cricket team and right down through the programme, so that everyone knows that if you misbehave or bring any kind of bad reputation on to this team, you know what’s going to come,” Vaughan said. “It’s the only punishment that will really hurt players.” He added that he would “feel” for Carse if he were made an example of.

Prior goes further as the coaching question resurfaces

On the same Test Match Special podcast, former England wicketkeeper Matt Prior called for Carse to be sacked, and the panel asked what Stephen Fleming, described by the BBC as the incoming head coach, can do about it — with Marcus Trescothick in interim charge of the Test side and Brendon McCullum retained in the white-ball job. England reconvene at Lord’s on Thursday with their off-field record again overshadowing a dominant first-Test win.
