England v Pakistan Second Test: Pakistan Lose Early Wicket In Reply At Lord’s

The England v Pakistan second Test moved on sharply during its second morning at Lord’s on Friday 28 August. England’s first innings ended after they resumed on 248 for 9, and Pakistan lost a wicket inside the first six overs of their reply.

The Guardian’s over-by-over had England 266 for 9 in the 62nd over, Gus Atkinson on 38, before the innings closed. Pakistan were 10 for 1 after six overs, Abdullah Shafique on 4 and Azan Awais on 3.

How the England v Pakistan second Test reached this point

England were dragged back towards parity on a weather-hit opening day. ESPNcricinfo reported them 248 for 9 at the close, Jamie Smith making 61 and Jordan Cox 55 in a stand of 67 for the sixth wicket after the hosts had slumped to 77 for 4.

Mohammad Abbas took 4 for 56 and Mohammad Ali 3 for 67 on a seam-bowling day. Abbas removed Emilio Gay, Ben Duckett and Joe Root as England fell to 36 for 3, and claimed his 900th first-class wicket along the way. Pakistan had won the toss and bowled under heavy skies.

Jofra Archer opened the bowling on Friday morning, the Guardian’s over-by-over describing his spell as fast and accurate and likening it to his work at the same ground in 2019. Pakistan’s openers survived, but the tourists were still in single figures at the end of his third over.

England lead the three-match series 1-0 after winning the first Test at Headingley by an innings and 103 runs, and Smith and Cox dug them out of trouble on Thursday. Play continues at Lord’s, with Pakistan’s first innings the immediate question for Joe Root’s side.
