The Board of Control for Cricket in India has confirmed the September 22 T20 International against Japan forms a strategic blueprint for long-term expansion in East Asia.
Secretary Devajit Saikia said the contest at Sano International Cricket Ground supports the government-backed “Sport 75” initiative. The reigning men’s T20 world champions will use the Tochigi trip to acclimate before the competition in Aichi-Nagoya.
“Cricket’s global journey is being shaped by moments that take the game beyond its traditional boundaries. The India–Japan T20I match on 22nd September,’26 is one such moment taking international cricket to Japan, connecting with a new audience and strengthening the game’s presence in a region with immense potential,” Saikia said.
Expanding The Global Footprint
The touring squad is captained by Shreyas Iyer, with Tilak Varma named as vice-captain alongside Sanju Samson and Vaibhav Sooryavanshi. Administrators view the push as vital preparation ahead of a potential 2036 Olympic bid, shifting operations from a “global ambition” to a verified reality.
Saikia credited ICC chairman Jay Shah for driving operations into non-traditional markets, describing the fixture as “more than a cricket match”.
“It is also an opportunity to recognise the vision and groundwork laid by Shri Jay Shah during his tenure as BCCI Secretary, and now as ICC Chairman, in placing the global growth of cricket firmly at the heart of the sport’s future.”
The governing body hopes this commercial framework mirrors other recent administrative expansions, which include exploring neutral venue bilateral proposals and securing East Asian television rights.
India begin their quarter-final campaign in Aichi-Nagoya on September 28.
