Former England captain Kevin Pietersen has joined the national white-ball coaching staff as a specialist mentor ahead of the 2027 World Cup.
The 46-year-old reunites with the international setup for the first time since his 2014 dismissal. Pietersen grew up in South Africa, providing local tactical insight for the upcoming 50-over tournament hosted across the region.
Immediate White-Ball Schedule
His tenure begins this month during the home T20 and one-day international series against Sri Lanka. The former batter will also travel on winter tours to Australia and South Africa.
Next summer, he remains with the squad for home fixtures against Pakistan and New Zealand. The busy domestic scheduling follows a crowded international calendar that recently forced a simultaneous dual squad split for India.
Brendon McCullum retained the limited-overs coaching role despite stepping down from the Test job this summer. The backroom staff includes Marcus Trescothick, Jeetan Patel, Sarah Taylor and Tim Southee.
McCullum said: “I’ve got immense respect for KP and what he’s achieved in the game.”
“He’s had an amazing impact on English cricket, so for someone with his experience, knowledge and stature to want to play a role with this team is a fantastic result.”
Pietersen, who mentored Delhi Capitals during the 2025 Indian Premier League, expressed his ambition to secure the 2027 title. The announcement follows a separate white-ball success where a Dunkley century helped England secure a series sweep against Ireland.
Pietersen added: “I am immensely proud to have been asked to help this team on their journey to win a World Cup in South Africa.”
England open their white-ball series against Sri Lanka later this month.
