Australian Cricketers Association demands revenue guarantees before Big Bash privatisation

The players’ union has warned Cricket Australia that a renegotiated revenue-sharing agreement must be finalised before the governing body can complete any domestic franchise sales.

CA initiated a formal sales process for the Melbourne Renegades on Tuesday, inviting private equity into the domestic competition despite formal state objections.

Union chief executive Paul Marsh stated the ACA expects capital raised from prospective A$200 million franchise valuations to be treated as shared cricket revenue.

New Player Contract Negotiations Required

The current agreement allocates players 27.5 per cent of domestic revenue.

The ACA is leveraging the proposed ownership shift to negotiate an expanded share and secure new player contracting arrangements.

This establishes a structural labour precedent for franchise cricket global equity models rather than treating the dispute as a simple administrative delay.

“Significant issues remain unresolved and the parties are currently a long way apart on a new agreement,” Marsh said.

The union maintains that fundamental commercial terms must be settled before new owners enter the competition.

Governing Body Retains Commercial Oversight

CA leadership emphasised that Test match primacy remains secure.

Chairman Mike Baird confirmed the central board will control the salary caps and oversee prospective investors.

This administrative shift covers both the men’s and women’s squads, arriving as international focus pivots towards upcoming Women’s Asia Cup fixtures.

Prospective buyers are slated to take charge of the Renegades for the 2027-28 campaign, with CA managing the franchise in a caretaker role throughout the intervening summer.
