New Zealand white-ball captain Mitchell Santner has rejected a two-year, six-figure offer from the Adelaide Strikers to preserve his central contract and national leadership role.
The 34-year-old declined the lucrative Australian franchise deal to prioritise upcoming home series against India and a Test tour of Australia. Under New Zealand Cricket regulations, centrally contracted players must remain available for the domestic Super Smash.
Managing International Leadership Obligations
Accepting the move would have compromised his availability for the national side. Santner admitted the financial appeal of franchise cricket was significant when speaking to the New Zealand Herald.
“The offer was good, I’m not going to lie,” Santner said. He highlighted the importance of retaining his central status to lead the team toward upcoming global tournaments.
“I don’t want to give up captaincy,” the all-rounder added, via Devdiscourse.

He acknowledged the shifting landscape for teammates Devon Conway and Lockie Ferguson, who recently transitioned to flexible casual arrangements. Santner accepted the trend of players seeking flexibility.
“That’s the way to keep guys invested and playing for New Zealand, that’s what we want,” he said.
His decision represents a rare defence of traditional contracting at a time when private investment in domestic franchises risks fracturing grassroots funding. It arrives just days after administrators in Australia approved private ownership sales across the Big Bash League.
