Warwickshire moved within five points of the County Championship summit after fast bowler Ethan Bamber inspired a dramatic 69-run demolition of Glamorgan on the opening day in Cardiff.
Bamber delivered a career-best 5-28 to surpass 50 Championship wickets for the season, dismantling the hosts inside 27 overs. Ed Barnard provided clinical support with the moving ball, taking 3-5 against the lower order to enforce Glamorgan’s lowest first-class total since they were dismissed for 60 by Middlesex in 2007.
Will Young Anchors Bears Reply
The visitors seized total control by stumps, reaching 129-3 to establish a commanding 60-run advantage. Will Young led the response, scoring a fluent 60 that nearly eclipsed the home side’s total before his late dismissal.
The rapid victory push keeps Warwickshire firmly in the Division One title race alongside frontrunners Nottinghamshire and Somerset, with just three fixtures remaining before the season ends on September 27. The ruthless seam bowling display comes as Ishan Kishan pressed India’s Test spot to pressure India’s Test wicketkeepers in the domestic Duleep Trophy.
Division One Title Race Tightens
Elsewhere in the top flight, defending champions Nottinghamshire recovered from 98-4 to post 377 against Hampshire at Trent Bridge, anchored by a century from Joe Clarke. Somerset, who sit four points behind the leaders, dominated Leicestershire as Josh Thomas struck exactly 100 in an opening stand of 181 with Tom Lammonby.
Warwickshire will resume their first innings on Wednesday morning seeking to bat Glamorgan out of the contest and secure maximum bonus points.
