East Zone Edge Towards Duleep Trophy Title On Day Five

East Zone’s captain batted his side to the brink of the Duleep Trophy title on day five by exploiting regulations that reward a first-innings advantage in drawn finals.

The wicketkeeper-batter amassed 350 runs across the match at the M A Chidambaram Stadium, including a massive first-innings double century. After reflecting on his leadership development before the tournament, he orchestrated a relentless accumulation strategy rather than pursuing an outright result.

Capitalising On First Innings Rules

Following a decisive 372-run first-innings advantage, East Zone declined to declare their second innings on Thursday. The skipper scored 80 from 98 deliveries, punishing the spin attack during the penultimate afternoon to stretch the overall lead beyond 584 runs.

South Zone had previously been dismissed for 336, with fast bowler Mukesh Kumar taking three wickets for 62 runs. Captain Tilak Varma fell for a valiant 99 as the bowling unit maintained absolute control over the contest.

Rather than risk a fourth-innings run chase, East Zone allowed Md Kounain Quraishi and Anukul Roy to bat deep into the final day. Quraishi struck a maiden first-class half-century with a composed 62, while Roy remained unbeaten on 30.

Their risk-averse accumulation absorbed the remaining time, nullifying the opposition bowling attack and ensuring they finish ahead on the domestic tie-breaker rules.
