Devdutt Padikkal will lead the India A side across two multi-day fixtures against Australia A in Puducherry from September 22, balancing captaincy with a delicate national selection battle.

Defending The Test Position

Vice-captain Sai Sudharsan joins the squad as his primary competitor for the Test number three position ahead of November’s series against New Zealand. Padikkal established himself in the role after Sudharsan suffered an injury, scoring consecutive centuries in Sri Lanka.

The 26-year-old has made conscious adjustments against spin, displaying a willingness to play off the back foot. Applying refined technical methods is vital at the elite level, a process familiar to fast bowlers discovering how mechanical tweaks can reclaim lost rhythm.

Responsibility Enhances Run Production

Taking charge of Karnataka last season yielded significant output, and Padikkal believes the added responsibility simplifies his approach at the crease.

“I think leadership is something that I really enjoy doing, especially starting with Karnataka last year,” Padikkal told DT Next.

He outlined that focusing entirely on securing team victories clarifies his batting mindset.

“As a captain, that’s your sole focus. You want to make the team win. That just helps my batting even further,” he added, as published by the Hindustan Times.

The Puducherry assignment offers a clear platform to outscore Sudharsan before the national squad is finalised. Maintaining this momentum acts as a vital blueprint pointing the way forward in his career progression.

Ruturaj Gaikwad will assume the captaincy for three subsequent one-day fixtures beginning on October 6.
