Steve Smith prioritises 2028 Olympics as Australian casts doubt on Ashes return

Steve Smith has cast doubt on his participation in Australia’s next Ashes tour of England after revealing he manages his Test career on a series-by-series basis.

The 37-year-old is reshaping his late-career trajectory by prioritising franchise versatility and the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics over traditional red-ball longevity.

Speaking to The Telegraph, quoted by the Hindustan Times, Smith admitted he cannot guarantee a farewell Test campaign in England.

“I don’t even know if I’ll be there yet,” Smith said. “Right now probably it’s just the Olympics to try to be a part of that.”

Franchise Focus Replaces Test Planning

Rather than mapping out a classic Test send-off, the batter is actively targeting Olympic selection through global franchise commitments. This includes a recent stint with Amsterdam Flames and a successful shift to opening the batting for Sydney Sixers in the Big Bash.

His transformation into a top-order power hitter reflects a deliberate strategy to prolong his white-ball career.

“I’m trying to get a bit stronger and hit the ball a little bit further,” Smith told cricket.com.au. “I’ve got to try and keep up with some of the guys that hit the ball a mile.”

While a Test retirement date remains unconfirmed, his focus on the 2028 Games is clear.

“I could still be playing T20 cricket in four years, so you never know,” Smith told the ICC.

Australia’s immediate red-ball transition begins with an upcoming three-Test tour of South Africa, where selectors may move Smith to number three.
