Pakistan Test captain Babar Azam has signed for Oil and Gas Development Company Limited as a guest player in the ongoing President’s Trophy first-class tournament.
Enforcing Domestic Central Contract Quotas
The batter makes his first domestic appearance in the longer format since December 2019 following an extended international slump. He has averaged 30.43 without a Test century since December 2022, prompting the Pakistan Cricket Board to enforce central contract quotas requiring top-category players to complete four to six domestic fixtures annually.
Babar missed the first Test against England at Headingley with an injury before fast bowlers exposed his short-ball vulnerabilities during a 3-0 series defeat. The board intervention forms part of a wider structural reset as Pakistan sit ninth in the ICC Test rankings and bottom of the World Test Championship cycle, mirroring friction seen when an Indian trophy standoff exposed regional protocol issues.
OGDCL Arrival And Match Availability
He joins Shaheen Shah Afridi and white-ball captain Salman Ali Agha in returning to the domestic circuit.
“Babar will arrive back in Pakistan from the UK on Sept 16 and will join the OGDCL squad the next day,” OGDCL sports head Farah told IANS News.
“His kit has been ordered. Babar will decide upon his arrival if he plays from the second match or the third match,” Farah added.
OGDCL are trailing Pakistan Television by 132 runs while following on in their opening fixture. The push for standard improvements follows Pakistan’s early exit from the 2025 Champions Trophy, creating tension akin to recent Asia Cup podium boycotts.
