David Warner signs for Kathmandu Gorkhas ahead of NPL Season 3

Former Australia opener David Warner has signed a marquee overseas contract with the Kathmandu Gorkhas for the third season of the Nepal Premier League.

The 39-year-old left-hander joins Sri Lanka’s Sahan Arachchige and India wicketkeeper KS Bharat on the franchise roster for the tournament, which runs from October 26 to November 21, 2026.

Landmark Signing For Nepal

Warner arrives at the TU Cricket Ground having gone unsold in recent Indian Premier League auctions, despite a decorated franchise career that includes three Orange Caps and a title as captain.

His addition brings significant commercial weight to the league, capitalising on veteran star power while the national setup pursues lucrative bilateral fixtures to elevate domestic competitive standards. The move also follows the rapid structural shifts seen across the continent’s emerging formats, including recent changes to Asian Games cricket pathways.

Prolonged Negotiations Secure Deal

Kathmandu Gorkhas executive director Anubhab Swar Sirohiya revealed the transfer required extensive discussions before the franchise could announce the two-time 50-over World Cup champion.

“Bringing David Warner to the Kathmandu Gorkhas was not something that happened overnight. It took months of conversations, persistence and belief from everyone involved. There were many moments when it felt difficult, but the possibility of seeing a player of his stature represent Kathmandu and play at the TU Cricket Ground made every effort worthwhile,” Sirohiya told kathmandupost.com.

Warner Anticipates Franchise Debut

In a video message released to supporters, the Australian expressed his eagerness for the upcoming campaign.

“I have heard so much about the passion and the fans. I can’t wait to experience it all. I can’t wait to meet you and get out there and be with my team,” Warner said via CricTracker.

Warner will make his first appearance in the competition when the franchise tournament begins in late October.
