New South Wales have appointed Nic Maddinson and Lachlan Shaw as their respective Sheffield Shield and One-Day Cup captains after Jack Edwards stepped down to manage his fast-bowling workloads.
Head coach Brad Haddin confirmed the leadership restructure ahead of the 2026-27 domestic season. The 34-year-old Maddinson returns to lead the four-day side after missing the entire 2025-26 red-ball campaign while recovering from testicular cancer.
Maddinson Returns To Shield Captaincy
Maddinson previously captained the state in six first-class matches during the 2015-16 season. He brings extensive leadership experience from his time at the Melbourne Renegades and Australia A.
The 23-year-old Shaw takes the white-ball role just 14 matches into his List A career. The appointment mirrors structural shifts across the domestic game, with Victoria accelerating internal youth pathways ahead of the new summer.
Strategic Shift For All-Rounders
Relinquishing administrative duties allows Edwards to prioritise his seam-bowling longevity and middle-order batting output. The tactical decision reflects the growing physical demands placed on high-use modern quicks, a workload reality that recently saw Bhuvneshwar Kumar target an India recall after recalibrating franchise commitments.
“Lachlan has established himself as an important member of the side through his calm approach and strong game awareness,” Cricket NSW chief executive Lee Germon told cricketnsw.com.au.
Vice-captain Sean Abbott and experienced batter Kurtis Patterson will support the new leadership group. Patterson stood in as captain during the second half of last season.
New South Wales begin their One-Day Cup campaign against Queensland in Brisbane on Tuesday, 22 September.
