  • Prabhsimran and Iyer power dominant batting display

Punjab Kings produced a statement chase in a high-scoring thriller, beating Sunrisers Hyderabad by 5 wickets after overhauling a daunting target of 220 with composure and firepower to spare.

In a contest dominated by fearless stroke play, Punjab Kings beat Hyderabad with authority, riding on fluent contributions from Priyansh Arya, Prabhsimran Singh and captain Shreyas Iyer.

Sunrisers had earlier lit up the stage through their dynamic opening pair. Abhishek Sharma and Travis Head unleashed a breathtaking assault, stitching together a 120-run stand that left Punjab searching for answers. The early surge promised something extraordinary, yet what followed was a shift few could have predicted.

Abhishek Sharma’s powerplay blitz leaves bowlers stunned

The early exchanges had belonged entirely to Abhishek. From the very first delivery, he signalled intent, launching the ball over the infield and setting the tone. He tore into the new-ball attack with audacious strokeplay, dispatching Arshdeep Singh and Xavier Bartlett with ease.

Head, initially watchful at 3 off 5 balls, soon joined the onslaught, taking on Marco Jansen with authority. By the end of the powerplay, Sunrisers had raced to 105 without loss, one of the highest such totals in league history.

Abhishek’s rapid half-century came off just 18 balls, while the 100 came up in just 35 balls, underlining the pair’s dominance.

Punjab’s response began with equal intent. Arya and Prabhsimran counterpunched brilliantly, putting together a 99-run partnership that mirrored the aggression of Hyderabad’s start.

Their measured yet attacking approach kept the required rate firmly under control. With a strong platform in place, Iyer stepped in with authority and guided the chase with calm assurance.

The finishing touch came from Shashank Singh, who sealed the win with the bat but had already played a decisive role earlier in the evening. His clever medium-pace turned the game on its head.

At a stage when Hyderabad were cruising at 120 without loss after 8 overs, Shashank struck twice in quick succession, removing both openers and halting the momentum.

Shashank Singh’s double strike triggers dramatic slowdown

His figures of 2 for 20 in 3 overs stood out sharply in a match that saw a staggering 442 runs scored. More importantly, his intervention triggered a dramatic slowdown.

From their blistering start, Sunrisers managed only 99 runs in the final 12 overs, a collapse in tempo that ultimately proved costly.

Yet cricket often turns on small moments, and Shashank’s introduction proved pivotal. His variations disrupted rhythm and forced errors.

Head fell trying to force the pace, while Abhishek’s dazzling 74 off 28 balls ended soon after. With the foundation shaken, the middle order struggled to recapture the earlier fluency. Heinrich Klaasen and Ishan Kishan threatened briefly but could not sustain the charge.

Despite finishing on 219 for 6, Sunrisers were left with a sense of what might have been.

Punjab marched on confidently, registering their 10th successful chase of a 200-plus target, the most by any side in the league’s history.

On a night defined by explosive batting, it was a blend of composure and timely intervention that ultimately separated the two teams.
