- No wickets in IPL so far
- Economical spells of bowling
- Mumbai Indians struggling for wickets
The Mumbai Indians have struggled to take wickets in this IPL, having only claimed 15 scalps in their four games so far, and their star bowler Jasprit Bumrah has none, which will be a cause for some concern.
Bumrah in IPL
Bumrah’s lack of wickets this season has been an issue for the Mumbai Indians. He has bowled in all four of their games so far, a total of 15 overs (or 90 balls) and has 0-123 with 29 dot balls.
He has 183 wickets in his IPL career for 4153 runs from 3427 balls at an average of 22.69. But it is his economy rate that’s been impressive. Over his IPL career, his economy rate is 7.27 rpo and for this season’s IPL, it’s currently 8.2 rpo.
In comparison, Purple Cap leader Prasidh Krishna’s economy rate is 9.5, and he has bowled one over more, with 10 wickets. In fact, Bumrah’s economy rate is better than all of the top five in contention for the Purple Cap.
Pollard: “not looking too much”
Despite wickets being hard to come by for Mumbai Indians in general, and Bumrah in particular, Mumbai Indians batting coach Kieron Pollard has said:
“We’re not looking too much into the wicketless nature of Jasprit Bumrah. He’s a world class bowler. He has done it time and time again for India and also for Mumbai Indians. When the time comes to get wickets, he’ll get wickets. If not, and he’s economical, we’ll accept that as well.”
Mumbai Indians Struggling
The rest of the Mumbai Indians seam bowlers are struggling as well. New Zealander Trent Boult has 1-110 from 9 overs with an economy rate of 12.22, Deepak Chahar has 1-42 from his four overs (10.5 rpo). Even their leading wicket taker in this IPL, Shardal Thakur has been going for 13.45 rpo (5 wickets for 148 runs from 11 overs).
They won their first game quite convincingly, a six wicket win against Kolkata Knight Riders, but since then, they have lost their next three games, to Delhi Capitals, Rajasthan Royals and Royal Challengers Bengaluru yesterday.
Bumrah’s figures in that game were 0-35 as RCB scored a massive 240 in their 20 overs. Former South African quick bowler Dale Steyn said:
“You’d take those figures every day of the week, in this total. He has put on a show tonight with all his skills, his yorker in particular has been fantastic. Yes, he has missed his length on occasion, but don’t see that often from him.”
Mumbai Indians next game is against Punjab Kings on Thursday, so they will be hoping that Bumrah is in the wickets.
