Caribbean icon and West Indies legend Gayle has taken a significant step into cricket ownership after confirming his involvement with a new Glasgow franchise set to feature in the upcoming European T20 Premier League.
The former West Indies opener has joined forces with India based entertainment company Mugafi Group, with the team set to compete under the name Glasgow Mugafians.
The move places one of the sport’s most recognisable figures at the heart of a competition aiming to expand cricket’s footprint across Europe.
Initial expectations had pointed towards an investment group fronted by Rahul Dravid and Ravichandran Ashwin securing the Glasgow franchise. That plan has now shifted, with indications they are turning their attention towards the Dublin based side instead.
West Indies legend Gayle brings global star power to new league
Gayle’s presence brings considerable star power. Across a career spanning more than two decades from 1999 to 2021, he made 103 Test appearances, 301 One-Day Internationals and 79 T20 Internationals, while also becoming a global figure in franchise leagues.
Speaking on his new role, Chris Gayle struck an optimistic tone about both the venture and the wider ambitions of the competition, saying:
“Europe represents cricket’s final frontier, and the ETPL has the potential to unravel promising local talent and nurture future heroes who will strengthen the sport in that region. I can’t wait to get started on this new journey.
“Stepping into the role of co-owner of Glasgow Mugafians marks an exciting new chapter for me.”
